Default Brakes

Out driving today, came to a light, had to really mash the brake pedal. It appears I no longer have power brakes. When I hit the pedal, I get a whooshing noise, when I let up, it stops. The car is a '92 with 135K miles. Power booster? Hard to replace? Any help is appreciated.

Sure sounds like the booster; never changed one myself.

From prior posts on the subject, I believe there is an adjustable rod from the brake pedal into the booster which should not be tampered with, if possible, else it make some tweaking to get proper pedal feel back.

Sounds like the diaphragm in the booster has torn, you get the typical hissing sound when pushing the brake pedal and you have to really stand on the brake pedal with the car barely slowing. It is fairly easy to remove the booster, unbolt the master cylinder (you have enough play in the brake lines to move the master cylinder away enough to remove the booster)

Now disconnect the booster rod from the brake pedal, remove the two nuts holding the booster to the firewall (that is the hard part head under the dash you will master the art of contortionists.

you can get a new standard plastic booster or get a new metal copy, the plastic gets brittle with the the heat in the engine bay. Most repair shops will not try to rebuild them as they tend to crack when trying to open the booster, the metal copy is the way to go.

they are also cheaper than the plastic ones.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking I'll replace the master cylinder at the same time, since it'll be off anyway. Is there a performance upgrade I can do while I'm replacing this stuff?

I recommend NOT replacing the master cylinder. You don't have to disconnect any brake lines to replace the booster. If you replace the master cylinder you will have to bleed it AND the brake system. Not particularly difficult, but why do extra work?

The performance upgrade is the metal booster that was mentioned earlier. It prevents this kind of problem:
