Do those of you have the Hurst short throw shifter in an 89-94 miss the reverse lockout feature? Thinking about picking up a short throw shifter for mine but am curious what it will drive like without the lockout feature. Is it easy to hit reverse when trying to shift into 6th? I know ZFDoc sells and can modify your original shifter into a short throw that retains the lockout, but I know it is the most expensive route. I really like the look of the Hurst short throw with the factory leather ****.
Was also curious if any of you prefer the factory shifter over a short throw or modified shifter?
Any insight would be great,
Patrick

You will HATE the factory shifter after getting your hands on a short-throw. I've had mine for 4 years and haven't accidentally hit reverse yet. The only thing I do is NEVER try to shift into 6th WITHOUT going to 5th first. I suspect this approach is the reason for my 100% success.
Disclaimer: I actually have the ZFDoc short-throw...but the one w/o reverse lock-out. I really like Bill and didn't care for Chris -- the guy selling the Hurst units. Plus, Bill said his newer units have a bit more "shortening" versus the Hurst now. But, they aren't so short that they got "notchy" like you hear about the B&M units.
Note: Don't confuse shortening with Crisco...though both COULD make your shifter smoother! LOL
Have been running a Hurst in my 94 for 10 years and have never hit reverse going into sixth. One of my favorite mods, puts a smile on my face everytime I row through the gears.
I remember that it is like most jobs on the Vette - not much room to work, and you can't see much of what you're doing. I had a helluva time getting the rubber boot loose from the tunnel - they slathered a bunch of nuclear bomb-proof glue on it. I used a bungee cord to hold back the rubber cover that goes over the linkage. Some folks have trouble getting the drift pin out that holds the linkage together - mine was pretty easy, once I could get at it. I'd recommend wearing nitrile gloves - it's a slippery mess in there. Having a helper who can jockey the shifter around when you disconnect/connect the linkage is handy.
If you are buying one of ZFdoc's shifters why not get one that has the reverse lockout feature? I had the Hurst and had some issues with letting my girl or even my pops drive the car as there is no crash-through pressure like on the blue tags; it just jumps right over goes in. I like the fell of the hurst, it was a nice piece, and with the crash through upgrade it would be awesom but without it I wouldn't run it. To each their own. Also, be aware that a solid billet shifter will allow for more harmonics to come through into the cabin. If you have any gear noise you may hear it more prevalent after the mod. Just a few things that I noticed with mine. Just my .02
I have the B&M; some here think it is too difficult to shift and makes it even more notchy, but I love it......you'll never miss a gear in this thing now....very quick throws.....reverse gear, you have to REALLY go all the way over and then down and put some elbow grease doing it...if you hit reverse with the B&M, you wanted to.........
Can the shifter be installed with the trans still in place? My engine is out right now and there is no C-beam on it either. Now would be the time if it is a real PITA while in the car.
Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like a great mod to do. I may hold off until the next time I have to drop the trans or remove the exhaust. I've had the trans out before for a clutch replacement so I am a little familiar with that area of the car, not sure why a short throw didn't cross my mind then. So it does sound like with the hurst there is a possibility of someone accidentally shifting into reverse, maybe not me, but anyone else that I might let drive the car. It seems stock is usually always the safest and most reliable route with any mod, but a short throw would be a nice addition to the driving feel of the car, not to mention it looks cleaner.

The answer is yes but it's not fun......at least with the B&M

ZFDocs is a modified stock unit. As such, no change in sound. I even run a ball (versus leather ****) and don't dislike added "feel" from the engine.
To solve any potential issue with accidental reverse shifting, I don't let anyone drive my car that can't understand the issue. And, I'm pretty easy about who I let drive it. It helps that I rarely take it to any shop either.
For anyone considering this mod, I do recommend doing it if/when you have the transmission out (or C-beam disconnected and trans lowered). Though it certainly CAN be done in the car, I didn't find it THAT fun with the trans on my garage floor!
C-beam can stay in place. If you have small hands the exhaust can stay in place. I loosened the rear exhaust hangers and pulled it slightly down for the install.

Okay cool. I have a Magnaflow 3" system so not sure if that would pose a problem.

Oh yeah...somewhere in this great forum is a DETAILED step-by-step instruction on how to do this. Complete with seriously good pictures!
I've linked it a few times for members doing this mod. If you can't find it by a standard search, maybe you'll find it in one of my posts about short-throw shifters. I think the instructional post is 5-10 years old. Still had picture links in tact last time I checked!
Yeah I read through that thread. Think it was by Phrogs. It looks straight forward but nothing is ever simple lol.
