On my 92 the steering wheel is loose, like the previous owner was using it for leverage to get out of the car. Basically I can grab the wheel and if I put a little pressure it will move down a inch. When I let go it springs back up to position. Is this easily fixed? I haven't tore into the column yet but I may do it this week. Is there anything I should look out for when tearing it apart? Pointers would be great.
Yours sounds excessive. I believe with one that bad you may be able to remove the cover from the turn/dimmer cover and see the damage before even starting. Here's a link to what I believe you need to do to assess the extent of the damage.
I've never used Marc's pin but it's certainly likely that it helps most typical damage. Yours sounds excessive, you need to keep in mind that even as new you could force the 7:00 "wobble".
There's a couple very good tutorials around for disassembly if you decide to rip into it. There was a recent thread regarding oversized pins also. I don't know that the project got off the ground but it's likely.
I used Marcs Pin with pretty good success. Still a little bit of play in certain positions. Tilt the steering wheel up to the highest position and see if it still has a wobble. Mine didn't wobble on the highest position, or 3 clicks down. Any other position and it would wobble, and still does a little bit. But they did wobble about 1/4" even when new. Just the nature of the beast. The pin does make it substantially better and doesn't take long to isntall.
With these cars, the steering wheel has a little play, the LT motors leak, and the ZF6's make noise!
