Has anyone here installed theyr own seat covers or did you have a pro do it for you. If you did was it easy to install or was it a major pain and ended up looking crooked. I need covers real bad, I just dont want to spend extra money if I dont have to. Thanks. :chevy
What car do you have, sport seats or regular, leather or cloth??
I put new air bladders into my sport seats and had to lift the leather half way up the seat back. It's a job alright but since I've seen results of some "professional" installations I would get the covering and new foam and try it myself.
I replaced them on a resto of a 77 Camaro Z28 a couple of years ago. Front highbacks and rear bench halves. You'll need the hog-ring pliers for about $10 or $20 and just a little patience. The seat covers typically come with a corded bead around the edges of the cover that you pull and hog ring to the frame. Same for the inner pleats. They have a ridge of material that you grab and pull to the framework and hog-ring it.
I was very satisfied with the job. I will look for some of the pics and post them so you can get an idea how good an ameture job can be.
I just spent two hours wrestling a nose bra on my '94 Vette tonight. I'd recover a seat any day rather than put that darn bra back on again!!!!
I just did my 85, they where std seats. The big thing is make sure they are warm so you can pull they tight. Do one a time so you can reference the other. Get extra hog rings because you will use a LOT.Take your time. I've done 2 other cars as well and the vet seats took me about 5-6 hours by going slow. They came out really nice and I've gotten compliments on how they look. If you should break any of the wires that run thru the foam don't worry, I used coat hanger wires to replace they. Just be real careful when you remove the little spring type wires that hold them. I didn't have any instructions with mine but they weren't hard to figure out. Again take your time. good luck
It was a job, okay - but I'd probably do it again. Next time I will order the hog rings from wherever I get the seat covers (probably Al Knoch) because it was really hard to find the correct size. Ended up using shoat rings from a hardware store.
I bought my hog rings from an upholstery shop and they sold them to me by the pound .......... also .......I drive my car everyday so I did the passenger seat first to learn how .........that way I could still drive it if I ran into trouble and make sure you buy new foam ............. I changed mine from grey cloth to black leather because I'm a mechanic and the black doesn't show grease as bad and is better for durability I think
