Default mass air flow?????

my 1989 has a couple of problems ?? it will not run with mass air flow sensor installed. it will crank but dies.....if I lay mass air flow sensor to the side it will crank and run ....just not to smoothly..i have 2 scanners 1 of them said there were 2 codes but when I try to retrieve codes both scanners say wait but never does anything...all help will be greatly app....................thanks ernie

To pull the codes:
-jumper ALDL pins A&B (upper right)
-turn ign On
-count the SES flashes

The SES will flash "12" three times followed by each trouble code three times ending with three more "12"s.

BTW, you can sub the MAF from a mid '80s F-body TPI car for testing.

Sounds like you may have a bad MAF sensor...When mine went bad the car woundn't even start, then when I unpluged it , the car started but ran ruff...I think it depends what goes wrong inside the maf sensor as to how the car will react..Some say the car just runs ruff, others say the car starts and then shuts off, and some have the problem where the car won't even start....One thing you may want to check before blaming the maf sensor, is to replace your maf power module behind the battery...If you have to replace your maf sensor, this module has to be replaced anyway and it could be causing your problem....WW
