Default A/C Clutch Squeaking when first engaged

On my 91, the compressor clutch squeaks for 15-20 seconds or so then quiets down. I am not losing any Freon but I did just charge the system a few weeks ago. Am I low on my oil charge? The can had an ounce or so in it that I added of 134a.

Can I spray something around the clutch to lubricate it?

Am I destined for a new compressor? Should I go to a shop and have them add another 2 oz of oil?

Thanks,

Mike

Probably just the A/C clutch going...don't want to say it's a common problem, but I have seen a fair share of similar threads on the forum over the years regarding similar symptoms, so I think it happens more often than naught...actually had my A/C cluthc die on me about 5-6 years ago.

Not too bad to replace it by the weekend mechanic...although you will need snap ring pliers to do so.

Can you rotate the clutch (drive plate) by hand with the engine shut down.. this is the spinning plate when the Compressor is engaged

Yes I can rotate it by hand with engine off.

There should be an air gap between the driven plate, and the Compressor Pulley of about .020" or about the same thickness as an business card! How does it look..

Is there any oil film or contamination on the belt it-self?

I fit a business card in between the clutch and the pulley...snug fit so it seems right. The belt is clean. Is there any product I can put between the pulley and clutch to stop the chirping for the first 15 seconds?

Thanks,

Mike

It is possible that a small amount of refrigerant/oil has leaked past the front compressor shaft seal and coated the friction surface of the clutch plates.. try cleaning the friction surface's with brake clean and see what that does for you.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Waiting on a new TPS and E-code headlights to show up from summit...I really hope I'm done working on this thing for the summer.
