Default Downside to a 2000+ torque converter?

Is it:
....Heat?
.....Daily Driveability?
.....Fuel Economy?

just trying to figure out....why all L-98 c4 autoÕs did not come with a higher stall...seems like a higher stall is better.

Compared to many other cars out there, it acutally does come with a high speed converter. :yesnod:

The higher the stall speed, the more heat it will develop, less gas mileage.
Driveability should not be affected as long as you choose the correct stall speed. A really high stall speed is not the best choice for a stock L98.
For a daily driven stock L98 I would not change the stock converter at all or go high than 2300-2600 rpm converter.

You picked a very good subject to get alot of responses ! ! ! ! ! My understanding (which is very little) is that it locks the tranny in at full torque, or engine power at the given stall speed. Now depending on the kind of racing you do, it will dictate the stall converter you want. I went with a 2500
stall on my last rebuild (700R4), not because I understand all the science behind the subject, but more because I took the advice of some racers here in town that I respect. My '92 is a daily driver, some freeway, some off the line (really red light) kinda fun. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: There's an interesting web site you can check out if you want to learn more about T/C's. http://www.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm Hope that helps a little.......................

Absolutely none. You'll love it. The heat is not really an issue because of the lockup feature of the converter. The only time the heat might be an issue is in stop and go traffic.

Uh.. try open tracking on a tight course with a high stall speed and no trans cooler and let me know how long your tranny last. Any extra slippage creates heat. :yesnod:

After seeing a C4 guy pull better short times with his '85 Vette with a 2,000rpm TC, I had my stock 1,500rpm TC replaced with a 12" lockup 2,000rpm unit during the tranny rebuild.

It now launches much harder (on street tires) and is only a little looser. It generates a little more heat but not enough to warrent an additional cooler (I don't auto cross).

If I went to say a 2,400rpm or higher TC I would have to use DRs at the strip, so this unit is right for my application.

In town mileage may be down a little (also I like to "play" a little more now) but of course highway mileage is still over 31mpg.

Dirvability is even a little better since I now have a little more torque availavble, up to the lockup rpm.
