Default Fuel issues

OK guys need some help again with my 1984 fixer upper. Was letting car idle yesterday and noticed fuel spraying out from under the passenger door. For some reason on both supply and return lines there is a piece of rubber fuel line. Return about 6 inches and the supply about 9 inches long. The return had a cut in it. I replaced it, then this morning went out to replace the supply. When I cut it to get it off gas started coming out. Usually after the pressure is off it quits but this kept flowing. I even disconnected the battery but it still kept coming. I finally just snatched it off and put the new piece on. So.. two part question... anybody know why the rubber lines are there. Brass fitting are on all four ends and they are flared like something should be there. I know that is not the location for the filter. Part two why would the fuel keep flowing? I had about a gallon total come out. My concern is what if the line failed under normal circumstances? I would have twenty gallons of fuel on the road. Sorry to be long winded but wanted to include all info. Will be on night shift the next 3 nights so may not be back on here every day. Again thanks in advance for your help.

YOU SHOULD be worried ! !

someone did a MAJOR jury rig and a DANGEROUS jury rigging there.

That is exactly where the fuel filter SHOULD be ! Under the passenger seat on the frame.

There is NO REASON for rubber hoses to be there ! That is HIGH pressure gas ! The hoses can and WILL come apart.
The steel lines SHOULD have the fittings for a fuel filter on the pressure side and there was a dampener can that goes in the return side. Hoses ain;t gonna hold 40+ PSI of gas pressure. That's INSANE !

The sight of the pump pushing out GALLONS of gas going down the freeway onto the red hot cat.....
yep, there's YOUR 15 minutes !

Seriously, you need to find another C4 and crawl under and LOOK. you will see a deflector plate covering the filter (that's missing) and you can see how the lines are routed. Its STEEL from the tank to the front of the engine where a SHORT section of HIGH PRESSURE rubber is MADE on the line, so the engine torque won't twist the steel lines at the intake manifold and cause them to crack. That's the ONLY rubber in the fuel line.

Bubba strikes again.......

Good luck ! please don't drive it like that ! besides a car-b-que, having no filtration is begging for problems at the injectors..

oh yeah, Question #2...

it siphons from the tank and will continue to siphon for as long as the fuel level is higher than the line that's open down there. This makes changing filters MORE fun than running naked thru a cactus garden.

OK did some research and found that it is my return that was leaking which makes sense as the supply would be under pressure from the pump. As per my FSM the filter is up behind my front tire inside the frame which it is. Which leads me back to my original question. Anybody know what goes here? Can someone look under their car and see what is in the fuel lines under the passenger door. I am trying to find one to look at.

thanks
