found my 88 vert has an x under it. Goes from front drive tire to rear passenger tire and opposite on the other side It appears to be some sort of cross brace. Looks like it will need to be dropped before I can drop my trans pan. Any comments or suggestions?
Not a big deal to remove but the higher you can get the car, the better. Each corner has two bolts and there are nuts to remove on each side of the back half of the brace. You can use a floor jack under the center of the brace to lower it and also to raise it back up when re-installing.
The brace is not real heavy but just bulky. The bolts are torqued to something like 47 ft-lbs and the nuts to 20 ft-lbs.
I think all the verts have an X-brace for rigidity. I could be wrong.
All of the C4 convertibles came with the underbody X-brace. But one thing to consider when adding it to a coupe is that some of the holes and weld nuts are not present in the coupe frame. The coupes don't have the studs in the belly pad either.
Also, the factory ride height of the convertible is slightly higher compared to that of the coupe. That's necessary because the X-brace takes up about 1-1/4" of space under the car.
