Default hot chip

Bought an 86 convert years ago and love it even with it's issues. My question is how can I determine if it has an aftermarket chip? The seller told me it did, even tho it didn't affect my decision to buy it. Would a scanner/code reader tell me? Or hooking up to a PC? Any info would help loads.

You'll have to pull down the ecm and then remove the cover for the chip. It's located under you pass dash cover and secured by two 10mm nuts I think. You should be able to see if it's an aftermarket or stock by looking at it. My hypertech says that on it or you can post the numbers/letter you see or a pic.

edit: unless your stock chip was reprogramed, then you'll not know unless you can read it.

Custom chips need to be removed when getting the car serviced or any diagnostic work done, if you forget a scanner tool can load a standard tune and the custom tune will be lost.
