my 87 started to make whining sound that seemed to come from the tranny area. Ive jacked up the car and removed the entire exhaust (fun fun) the torque bar and the tranny extension. I thought the extension bushing was bad(it has some play between it and the yoke. Unfortunately I think the tranny is bad because if i grab hold of theshaft sticking out of the back of tranny i can pull it in and out of the tranny about 2-3mm of pushed in and i spin it there is no noise but if i pull it out and spin it i can hear a whining noise similar to the one i was hearing going down the road.
i assume this should not be?? i also remember that the noise\whine was noticable when accelerating but all but dissapeared when let off on the gas. Im really sorry this is so long but i wanted to include as much info as possible. I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and any help i can get. i really cant afford $1000 for a rebuild but im afraid that is where this is going. :cry

Boy i hope someone has some idea, while i dont get a whining noise, i do get what feels/sounds like a shudder during shifting generally 2nd to 3rd, and like you... only under load

well the output shaft WILL move a little. There is an end play spec that is used during a rebuild and there are selective washers (or shims) to set this. The shaft will move up and down without the driveshaft in place because the bushing that holds it still is in the tailshaft housing and it rides against the driveshaft.
Now ......as for the noise .......it may be a planetary gearset whining ..... that's a bad thing. The whole trans will have to be gone through to fix this. Not sure about prices because I do ALL my own work and I am a teacher of this stuff so I'm sort of out of the loop as far as that goes. It's a shame you aren't near because I do some on the side for cheap.
ANYWAY .......as long as you have it that far apart you might as well as pull the trans yourself and save a little money...........
sorry I can't be of more help

it only whines if i pull out ( toward the back) of the tranny. if it is pushed in it makes no noise. can this shaft be removed and shimmed without removing tranny? I really appreciate your help.

Was wondering if i could bug you one more time. Ive been on vacation and now im ready to pull the tranny. I was just wondering if there is any way to be sure that the tranny is the problem. Im just having my doubts now and dont want to do the wrong thing. I called a local tranny shop and they suggested that i put it all back together and have them drive it first. I really dont want to put it all back together and remove it again. Im also concerned that it might rurther damage the car if i drive it more like it is.
They aslo said that the rebuild would run between 400-1000 dollars depecding on the hard parts needed. They would be using all updated parts including clutch packs with 5 instead of the 3 oem put in????Greek to me.
thanks a bunch

The 4 speed transmission is probably ok, but the rear most device on your transmission is the OD and they last till about 170k miles. You can buy a rebuilt OD for $1200. If you remove the inspection pan on the OD and it is littered with brass shavings, then its time for a rebuild .

Wow, what tranny are we talking about here?? I'm confused. I just assumed we were dealing with a 700r4 but then you threw that in about the o/d. Then I looked back at the original post and can't tell for sure. We better get some clarification here.
Re: Need help Tranny problem i think. please help (daves87)
There could be plenty of sources for the whine. I rebuilt my 700r4 and don't remember an end play for the tail shaft, only end play for input shaft. The out put shaft is held in place by a snap-ring so you have to disassemble the tranny to get it out. I think it would be worth it to have a shop trouble shoot it. It could save you the cost of a rebuild. It could be just the pump. You could replace just that, but at that point you might as well rebuild it.
