Default Side-Side Play in the Piston

I pulled my heads off last week to get some porting done and decided to clean off all the carbon buildup on the pistons while I was at it. While doing so, I noticed there was a little side to side play on the pistons that were near TDC. Is this normal or something to be concerned about?

Its normal. A ridge at the top or some explosion marks in the walls is common. Ive seen low mile race motors with enogh play to make noise. Said it was just "piston slap" its ok and wont rob much power.

In the old days we set engines up loose and had piston slap until they warmed up............. that was in the day of 30 30 Corvette cams (sometimes called Duntov cams) ..........you could hear the valves clattering from those things almost a block away ...........but they sure had a pretty idle.............. yup the good old days ...........drum brakes and skinny tire and stuff....... I'll keep my C-4 thanks .........i drove my buddy's 69 vette yesterday and forgot how bad those cars really were.........whew!!!!! :yesnod: :seeya
