I have recently ran across what I think is a good deal on an 84 Vette. It has the orginal crossfire with a t56 out of a 93 camaro. I have been doing some reading the past couple days trying to figure out if I want to buy this Vette. The guy says it is in pretty rough shape, speedo doesnt work, oil leaks, interior "rough", needs paint but the body is not busted up, all for $2750 obo. I was wanting to know if the early crossfires can be swapped to carb. without much hassle? Will later heads work on that 350 etc.? Any info would be greatly apprieciated, links would help too.
Sound like a bit of a project to me ! ! ! Try this web site www.crossfire.webhop.net I've only been able to access it once in the last couple weeks, I understand it runs on a guys home system.......
I think I would try for the "best offer" at something less than the initial asking price but even at that it seems to be a pretty good deal. Again, I haven't seen the car and cannot say for certain. The speedo not working is no surprise, the early C4 digital dashes will go bad in time. You might expect to fork out something on the order of $350.00 for a "re-built" dash unit. The oil leaks are pretty common with the 84 Crossfire but they are more time consuming to chase down than expensive. Expect valve covers, oil sending unit and from seal to leak. You can apply a carburetor to the engine but I don't know why you would want to. The Crossfire does not lend itself to lots of "bolt-on" performance and horsepower gains come with a fair amount of effort and expense but they can be upgraded into the 300 pony range. You won't find a lot of aftermarket help though.
Thanks for the help. I guess the main question I am asking is the 350 that is in the 84 vette basically the same as any other 350? IF I was to purchase a rebuild kit, does it need to be vette specific? I was looking to dump the crossfire to get rid of the computer and to simplify everthing.
No, don't need "vette" specific parts. A 350 block is a 350 block. The older 350's like 1972 or older had thicker castings in the area of webbing and bosses etc. That's why they can be bored out to even .060 over without having over heating problems. It all depends on what you wanna accomplish. I'd ask around you're area for a good engine shop or race shop and get someone to help you design YOURmotor for your needs.... :flag
It is essentially the same 350 cid small block that is used in tons of GM cars and trucks, though many internal parts are Corvette specific. I have been told that the throttle bodies on the 84 Crossfire are from a Cadilac, the Crossfire just uses two whereas the Cadilac uses only one. If you go to a carb you will not be able to meet emissions testing. You will also lose a lot of fuel economy. I have never had a problem with the computer on mine and haven't run into anyone else who has either. I wouldn't let the computer scare me away from the stock configuration.
