Default Fuel leak?!

Smelled like gas driving to work this am so i popped the hood and looked around and found a pool of gas sitting on top the motor between the injectors. Drivers side had more than the pass side. I fired it back up to see if i could tell where the leak was but nothing. Any thoughts? Im no mechanic and dont own a fsm yet. Anyone have a diagram of fuel lines to check out? Wont be driving anymore until its fixed thats forsure!

I don't think you need a fuel line diagram on this one. The horizontal silver rail the injectors attach to at the top is the fuel rail. From where you found the gas, I would say that you have a bad O-ring near that area. Could be on the rail side (top) or intake side (bottom), but I would guess the top as the fuel would have to fight gravity to come up from the bottom (stranger things have happened though).

You should be able to cycle the key on and off without starting the engine to put pressure in the fuel rail to help you diagnose the source more safely, but I am pretty certain that you will need to pull the rail and replace the offending O-ring....and if you are going to pull the rail, you should replace all the O-rings and the fuel send and return line O-rings since they will all be exposed anyway.

Worst case scenario, you will need to disassemble the rail and replace the O-rings that seal the sections as well, but once you pull the rail, it isn't that much more work.

Where are you? You may have a forum member near you that can guide you though in person.

Any major auto parts store should have them.

Before opening up the top of your L98 you might pull the FPR vac line, plug it and start the engine. If gas comes out of the FPR vac port you have found the problem.

If you have a non-89 you might check the 9th injector fuel tube that fits into the LH rear of the fuel rail.

Has anyone done any "maintenance" work on the engine recently?
