Our 93 5.7L L98 based truck engine that is in our 93 conversion chevy van has been giving us some problems.
I thought i might give it a try posting in here, since it is L98 based.
We are in Ohio on vacation, and its coming up with these no-start conditions.
Let me explain from the beginning
A few days ago, we tried to start it in the morning. No luck,it just turned over. We added some fuel into the TB, and it started right up.
Next morning, same thing, but adding fuel didn't help.
We had it towed to a shop where the fuel filter was replaced. That worked, but from then on the idle was really high.
A few days go past, running fine but with a high idle, and this morning it wouldn't start again.
We tried and tried. Finally, after 10 or so attempts, it started with no problem out of the blue.
We are totally confused here, and don't want to be stranded on vacation or on the 600 mile drive home!!
Well, I recently had some trouble with my '90 305 TPI Camaro. It would not start. The problem turned out to be a severely coroted (sp?) distributor cap and rotor. With the new cap and rotor it starts fine every time now...
Probably not the same problem you have, but it's something to check...
I really don't think the dist cap and wiring THERE has anything to do with the high idle but it may be a problem with the no start condition. I think you have two separate problems here. Being that the engine is a replacement you may want to trace the steps to put that engine IN there. Look down around the starter for loose connections at the sloenoid area. A lot of Chevies get all their power from this area. Look for fuse links too ....... not that they'd be burned because that would be a permanent no start but maybe a loose wire here. when you said you were able to fire it up by spraying fuel into it makes me wonder if the pump is running. Can you hear the pump run for a sec or two when you cycle the key? ......... how about the wiring at the throttle body? ........is this a tbi conversion or did you keep the tuned port system (I'm assuming you put tbi on the tuned port engine) ......sorry I can't be any more help than that but maybe you gained some food for thought :flag
thanks guys
We finally traced the high idle to a messed up cruise control cable.
With that out of the way we are still confused to why occasionally in the morning it won't start.
On the days it wouldn't start, was there any rain or significant moisture involved? I have experienced problems with plug wires or bad caps that let moisture in and cause no start conditions.
One other item, you may have got a load of bad gas. Had a car that drove me nuts, and turned out to be a load of crap in the tank. Hope your's is easier than that.
