Some people I know who have been building Chevy engines for a VERY LONG time told me the secret to a big increase in small block horsepower is a cam and head work.
I also have a 86. The cam in our cars is very mild. Late 86 has the Alum. heads and early 86 has the iron heads. neither one is great and don't flow much better than the old "fuelie" heads. Don't forget to get headers. I have Headmans and do NOT care for the fit. Advise you to get a different brand. Also, while you are under that clamshell hood, install emergency hood cables to pop that hood when, not if, a hood cable breaks.
