Rear Toe Link.....Nope....Shocks!!
I checked all the bushings on the dog bones, diff carrier, spring, etc...all were great. Next suspect was the rear toe link; 27 years old, 155,000 on it, but seemed fairly solid. I pulled the spare tire & carrier, and placed a GoPro on a magnet, looking right at the toe link, and then each toe tie rod end...nothing. No slop whatsoever.
Pulled off a lower shock mount nut and decided the rear shocks were in need of replacing anyway. I got a pair of the KYB 5564's for the 84-87's, and slid them on.
WOW. It drives like it did when it was new; half a lifetime ago. I could not believe all the bushings were in such good shape, and then I could not believe what a huge difference new shocks made.
It has been mostly trouble free its whole life, but will need a new engine soon, carpet, and some other work. After having it so long the best money I have spent is as follows:
Timing chain, cover seal, and oil pump at 100K...$100
Fuel Pump_____$110
Bulldog remote entry kit...$50
New 14089936 relays for the MAF & Burn Off...$50
KYB rear shocks...$65
LED Footwell lights...$5
Smartest stuff I have done:
TB Coolant Bypass
Hood Pop B/U Cables
Cut hole near upper RT control arm to help get #2 spark plug out
Later C4 model hoop prop rod
Convert CHMSL to LED
