Default loud exhust

Just picked up a 84 with a cat back system which is toooo loud for my taste, though it does look good....., it would not be bad if the car had some performance ,but you know it's an 84 Xfire. Any suggestions on what is a quite muffler arrangment, reason I ask is another 84 I had was also quite loud with a pair of stock mufflers from ZIP... any suggestions on how to quite this thing down, other then shutting the engine off. . thanks.

Kehrer923 has posted that he has a T.P.I.S. cat-back system for his 84 that is too quiet. Why not try to work out a trade ?

My '88 was delivered with a totally stock exhaust system two years ago. I drove it from Phoenix to NY and it was very quiet.

Check your car for a good cat and see what mufflers are on it. Stock exhast should be a little aggressive but not very loud.

I wish I had some pics I could post of this, but I just built a butterfly valve, that I can open or close, and I tac welded it to each of the outside pipes of the mufflers (2 rear exit pipes per muffler and plug the outer rear one with the valve) Anyway, I designed the valve from throttle bodys, and I am able to open and close it. You cant even see it, unless you really look, because it sits inside the pipe. Makes a HUGE difference. When closed it is a little deeper than stock. When open it sounds like a UPS truck. LOUD and resonation is awefull. I love it closed though. I will see if I can post a pic.

Frank,

Just read all the posts. I think I remember reading some time back that a stock catback system from a late C4s can easily be adapted to early C4s to achieve good performance and remain quiet. You might do a search (check archives) for exhausts, sounds, loud, etc.

And as someone posted you can probably find your pick out of someone's garage. Since I installed Corsas I not only have a complete stock system but also muffler elims which are taking up space.

thank you for your response, I will check out the for sale area, I suspect I can get some stock ones some place. Once before I had some ZIP muffs and they were also quite loud for a "stock" piece???? thanks again. The car has flowmasters and they ae just way too loud for me, my head is still ringing, well, more then usual.

My '87 has pre-cats plus the main catalytic converter which is plenty quite even though I elimated the rear resonators altogether. You might think about installing the front "Y" from a later C4 as an option.

BTW, don't let anyone tease you about having an Cross-Fire. I had an '84 and it ran and rode better than my '87 did when it was stock. But my '85 Z51 rode better too. I don't know why this '87 Z52 rides like a buckboard no matter what shocks I put on it. But that's another story.
