I have 53k on my car and am having the fuel filter changed tomm. as part of normal maintenance. Also having my bushings and brake lines checked. Should I replace my fuel pump also? It isn't acting up but I dont know if they can weaken and hinder performance any or when they go they just stop working completly. So should I get a new one while my car is in the shop or is it not needed and a waste of money? Thanks.
My 96 Lt1 went at 87k, but not the way you would think. I had a starting problem (cranked several seconds before firing) Determined a fuel pressure drop after initial 2 sec. fuel pump run when you turn on the key. By process of elimination I figured out the check ball in the pump was bad, allowing gas to return to the tank as soon as the pump stopped running. Replaced pump. :D
I agree with the other members...don't fix what isn't broke.
Changing the fuel filter is always a good idea.
Recently, I wrote a post that read something like this: "150K miles...is my fuel pump shot?"
Turns out is was my fuel pump.
Most of the forum members who sent a reply told me that their pumps lasted anywhere from the mid 90's to 124K, and even another that went out at 150K.
The usual symtom of a pump going bad...is your engine will start, but will quickly die. When you go to re-start...same thing happens.
On occassion, you may get away with the engine firing and you being able to drive off, thinking everything's fine. Believe me, you'r living on borrowed time.
I have an 89. The last 2 times i have filled up. After filling the car cranks but will not start. Each time i had to push it away from the pump. After setting about 10 minutes and cranking about 30 seconds it started and ran fine. No more problems till exactly the same thing happened about a week later when i went to fill it up. Both times i drove about 3 miles after the initial morning start. Then a few days later i drove it to work. At noon i couldn't get it to start. I went out again at 4:00 to check it and it started immediately and i drove it home and haven't had time to do anything except check the ignition module and it tested ok. Could this be the fuel pump failing? It runs fine otherwise. It has 115000 on it. I assume it is original pump.
