I was cleaning my plugs including the MAF connection I wanted to clean the unit itself but after dismantling the intake system until I reached the unit I couldn't reach the actual sensor. Any advice on how to reach the sensor itself so I could clean it would be great only 17 and I'm studying criminal justice not mechanics. Also the warm starts are long and sometimes take two tries anyone else have any experience with that issue or have fixed it before? Thanks in advance!
Be carefull with your maf is a very sensitive unit, the hot wire inside can break in a blink, different style of maf, some use a thin blade coated with a thin film remove that film with a wrong cleaner and you are done... Not a fan of cleaning a 300$ maf , don't ask me why...
You might want to make sure that MAF burnoff is happening. That heats up the MAF sensor wire until it glows red to burn off any contaminants. On your car it is controlled by a burnoff module under the dash.
Burnoff only lasts for about 1 second, so it's kind of hard to see it. The ECM must be in closed loop mode, so the engine needs to be hot. If you pull the MAF sensor off the plenum the engine will die, so that doesn't help.
When the engine is hot and running, pull off the air cleaner coupler that attaches to the front of the MAF. Put a mirror in front of the MAF so you can see inside it. Turn off the ignition. I do it by having the door open and standing near the outside rear view mirror and reaching into the car and switching off the ignition. You need to be watching the mirror/MAF while you're doing this to see the red glow. It fast and you'll miss it if you're not paying attention.
