Default Fuek Pressure Regulator

Am I correct to assume that any gas smell in the vac line is bad and its time to replace the diaphragm?

Yup. Safe bet.

that diaphragm should seal like a drum. And IF there is gas smell in the vac line there is a damn good chance there has been gas in that line as well.....raw gas entering the plenum/intake causes rough running, rough idle, a rich smell at higher rpm, and eventually fouled plugs and damage to the engine,.
you want to fix this before it fills a cyl with gas and fires and tries to turn over....
trust me on that.

That diaphragm sells for about $75 at most parts stores. For the cost you might consider an adjustable for <200.00 that comes with everything.

Thanks Lee. The symptoms you describe are what I am experiencing now. Ive had a lot of rough running issues of late. Other than running rich, my scanner is telling me nothing so I am figuring its fuel related.

What size are the tamper proof screws so I can get the bugger apart?

ummm...THAT I could not answer without taking my plenum off to see what fits !

I know the dimple-torx bits are fairly common now, and the bit that fits is near the 2nd to the smallest in the kit of bits.

Not before you verify it is gas with an open flame.

IF you are going that far, why not go a further step? Take off the injectors and put them where they belong. Recycling. Get some rebuilt injectors from FIC. The stock injectors are Multecs and are worse than broken injectors. Broken injectors you know have to be replaced. Multecs, you never know since you have the illusion it works.

The '85 cars actually came with Bosch type 1 injectors from the factory

New injectors are definitely on the list but unless they are the issue they will have to wait. I am itching to get some Bosch 3s from FIC but budget rules them out until I am sure. I ohmed them out a few months ago and all was well and I am going to redo that today as well as get a piece of hose and listen to each one. I am not sure what to do with the 9th injector tho.

Never ohm my injectors. I send them out for testing. If the injectors are spraying bad, they can ohm fine.
