oh no......
hear we go again with the great ZF6 oil debate
the oil debate rages sometimes.
I just ordered from Jeff at Superior Chev 3 qts. of ZF6 oil from GM which is pt# 1052931. $5.00 thru him.
my local dealership wanted $17.00a quart!!! :mad
ok, what if someone were to mix Redline and GM stuff?
It doesn't matter if you use Redline, GM or Castrol RS, the fact is that the more metal particles that circulate in the ZF6, the more chances he'll have that something will go wrong.
I think that $30-40/year IS cheap insurance compared to a $3500 rebuild of that ZF...
GM sells the factory fluid for under $9 list price. Any more than that and you should report them to the GM complaint dept. They buy the oil in a box of 6 or 12 bottles, I can't recall. This is why dealers gouge on this slow moving product or use "handy" 5W-30 motor oil to top off.
Just changed mine last night. About 2.5 qts. Plugs are a bit tricky to get out, I had to make a tool out of a bolt and a couple of nuts. They were in there too tight (first time ive done it since i've had the car), so i just snugged them back in.
Took about an hour, and you're right, its cheap insurance to help protect such an expensive transmission.
Next task is to service the hydrolic clutch system. I read on the ZF site that most tranny failures are caused by a faulty hydrolic clutch. Ill probablly get a new slave, and flush with new oil.
