My '95 has recently developed a hard time starting. I have had it for a month and had no problems until last Friday. Put the key in and turn and nothing. At first I thought maybe dead battery, but the radio came on and all the lights worked. So I turn again and still nothing. No clicking or anything. Try it again and it fires up. The car runs fine once it starts up and doesnt die. Just when I try to start it up, I either get nothing or it chugs a couple of times then fires up. The radio and and lights all work tho.
This may or may not be related or it might not even be a problem, but the Volts seem to fluctuate a lot. They are usually at 14.1 or 13.9 when im running and during idle like at a light it moves from 13.4 - 13.9. Never staying on one number for more than a few seconds.
Can you hear the start enable relay click behind the center of the dash when it won't crank? If you can , then jump the clutch switch (xmsn selector switch if automatic). If you can't hear the relay click, then you have a VATS problem. First try your spare ign key as its pellet contacts are higher than your everyday key. Also, if your voltmeter drops a volt or more when you attempt a crank, then you may have poor battery connection and removing the batt cables neg first and clean them and the batt terminals and replace neg last. Read any of my replies to VATS posts for more ideas.
The voltage is still strong so I wouldn't suspect the alt; the fluctuation at idle may be due to accessories such as A/C cycling. Try it with all accessories off.
After trying the suggestions and the problem still not solved, I took the car into the shop. Bad starter.......
Should get it back monday
I hope cause I am going thru withdraws already
