Default Ls1 swap

Hello

I have an 87 Corvette and just bought an LS1 engine for 400 bucks on ebay. I was wondering should I wait to buy the transmission for this engine or would I be able to use the factory C4 transmission? I am also going to rebuild it and what would be some good mod upgrades? Would I be able to reach over 400 hp? I do like the digital dash would I be able to keep that? I have never done anything like this before.

Thank you
