1989 zf6, I'm soooo close. I can't get the engine to detach from the bell housing. I removed motor mounts so i can just pull forward. I have the trans supported and a chain from accessory bolt driver front and passenger rear. I've sat on rad shroud and placed feet on support and pulled as hard as I can but it just won't budge. I removed crand pulley and exhaust so it has tons of room. I loosened c beam bolts a bit to help trans move but it just won't let go. It is separated about 1/2 to 1 inch depending on angle of engine...
Any ideas. Taking the trans out is so ridiculous and takes longer than getting the engine ready to take out. I don't want to add 6 hours of work!

Since you say "depending on angle of engine", it sounds like something is crooked. The trans input shaft needs to be aligned with the centerline of the clutch splines, or it will bind up with the pilot bearing. Keep the pressure pulling on the bell housing while you align the clutch/trans shaft.
I've had alignment dowels cause that, they are just so tight they will not come out of the bell housing. It sounds like more of an angle issue though. I would put a floor jack under the bell housing and slowly lift it up until it is almost touching the firewall, then bring the engine up to where it looks like it is at the same angle as the trans. If it does not come free then try raising it just a very small bit, do this until it separates. You may have to lower it the same way depending on the angle. If this does not free it up then a pry bar, used real gentle like between the engine and bellhousing may be the key. Just don't try to force it.
I took my bellhousing off with my motor in my '88 and left the 4+3 in place. No issues at all but like you I did have to remove the motor mounts off of the block.
Not looking forward to installing the 350 back in though.
Might try sticking bolts back in and going for separating bell housing from the trans. I just don't want to go down the road of taking off the drive shaft and c beam completely. Such a pain with the shifter boots too.
Got it! Must have been the fork. As soon as I pulled the bolts on the trans to bell housing engine slid right off. I had to pull the trans about 2 inches back from where it mounts on the c beam. The canton oil pan actually contacted both motor mounts but when I moved trans back it cleared in front. Now I wish I had two engine stands one for new engine to assemble and one for old to disassemble.
