I posted a couple of weeks ago about a problem with my baby. The car wouldn’t start (not like a dead battery or bad starter, like something was in a bind). After a few tries, she finally started but was spewing steam/smoke. I am colorblind so I couldn’t tell if it was steam or smoke. After a while it would stop and I drove the car a couple of times after that. The last time I drove it, it started idling very roughly. Over 2000 RPM it was as smooth as it could be. Needless to say, she has been parked in the garage ever since. Yesterday, I went out to see if she would start. I turned the key and “POP”. It sounded like a .22 rifle went off under the hood. Any ideas what might have happened. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you were dumping coolant into one or more cylinders.
That's kind of what I was thinking. It took a while to get enough coolant in the cylinder to create enough compression to prevent the engine from turning. Maybe the pop was the head gasket blowing in a different place (I hope :( ) I guess I need to get the Torx tools out.
You have a blown head gasket and coolant in at least one cylinder preventing the starter from cranking but drawing LARGE enough current to make a loud bang when the starter solenoid made contact. Pull your plugs and you will find one or more that are wet and/or blue colored. Its time to pull the heads.
Sounds like cylinder head gasket went south. What could be happening is cylinder fills with water near top dead center, valves closed, hydorstatic lock. Eventually some gets by the rings and you can get the thing started. I'm guessing you may find some water in the oil. At any rate, some wrenching to do. Go for it.
