I'm going to adjust the parking brake on my 85. It's not holding tight enough. I've seen two different ways to do it. One is just to tighten the cable at the adjuster where it meets the two back cables. The other one I'm not sure about is having to adjust the star wheel inside the parking brake shoes and then adjust the cables. Can I just do it the easy way and just use the inline adjuster by the back two cables?
If you're attempting to make the brakes functional and working well you need to start with the shoe in rotor adjustment. The hardware used inside of the rotor (springs, adjuster etc.) need to be clean, lubricated and adjusted properly first. Attempting to adjust elsewhere first I believe could likely create maybe more issues.
The procedure for adjustment in the FSM is quite straight forward I believe and would be used "AFTER" you confirm the condition of the shoes and all hardware involved.
In the FSM I don't believe there are "alternatives" or short cuts. It's the correct way or just disregard the function of the parking/e brake.
Do you have the FSM? I'm quite sure the star-wheel adjustment is through the rotor so there's no reason not to do it correctly after inspecting, cleaning and lubricating.
