I understand the 1996 C4 could be had with run flats, and that those cars with that option had no spare tire. Further, there was a crush bar that mounted in the spare tire well to maintain the crash protection that the spare provided.
Is this correct? If so, can you buy the crush bar? Does it weigh less than the spare? I was just wondering if it's a cost-effective way to shed a few pounds on a regular C4.
I did this on my 95. It's fairly easy, especially if you have a shop manual with the picture. Removing the spare does not save as much weight as it did on a C3, because the space saver spare is lighter than a full size tire. The crush bar is aluminum.
After removing the spare tire, carrier, and various brackets, and adding the crush bar, the net savings is about 25 pounds.

The spare tire delete is not part of the EMT tire option. It is a separate option but you have to order the EMT. My 1996 has EMT and has the spare tire.
