Default 1995 6-Speed No Start Help

Looking for some advice on troubleshooting my no start issue. Started out intermittent. Thought it was battery, jumped it made it home and then had problems again. I've been able to start by jiggling ignition key a couple of times. Read about vats. Tried cleaning contacts no luck. Took readings of key chip, Got to vats wiring under steering column and disconnected wiring. Took reading with key in and reading was same as key. Took key out and had open reading. I've pimpled clutch and wiggled switch and still no start. I hear fuel pump prime and when I turn key I get click like a drained battery and you get that starter felonious click. New battery on vehicle gauge shows 12.1-12.4. Reading and when I did get started voltage would read 14.1 making me believe alternator was charging battery. Any assist would be great...wife is threatening to sell my first vette I just bought 2 months ago.

If you are hearing the starter solenoid click but no go, then maybe it's the contacts in the solenoid or your power cable is corroded /dirty.

The ignition switch has a fine wire that reads the Vats and from what I have been told they break down over time until they complete break.

I had a very very similar issue. Had to get the car towed. Turned the car off, sat for a couple mins then would not even try to start. apparently it was the battery from what the stealership told me. but see you said you have a new battery and you're getting a click and I didn't. COULD BE THOUGH. and from that your security light shouldn't be on so it's not VATS.

If you're getting a click from the starter solenoid, you can forget about the VATS system causing trouble.

Clean the battery connections thoroughly, and while you have the battery disconnected, disconnect and clean the connection at the starter and the ground connection.

If it still won't crank, measure the voltage across the battery terminals while somebody tries to crank the engine.

If all's well there, measure the voltage across the big post on the starter and chassis ground.

If all's well there, the problem's in the solenoid or starter.

Live well,

SJW

Thanks all. Security light goes off with key in. Put new batt on charger and that did't help. Will remove and replace starter enable relay and see if that fixes it. If not I'll start tracing back leads from batt to starter as suggested. Note...when installing new batt I cleaned battery terminal leads. I'll take a teleology though because I did clean a lot of corrosion off pos terminal before. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again!

Well, yes there are many complicated electrical systems on these cars. But, at heart, it is still a good ol' small block chevy. In the small block chevy, as many cars, turn the key and hear the starter click, 99 out of a hundred, the solenoid is done.

Get yourself a new starter and enjoy your car. I put in a reman'd unit from autozone over four years and 40K miles ago, still cranks hard every time.

Read more quick easy troubleshooting of start issue at night. Turned on lights and tried turning ignition and lights did not dim. Heard this was systematic of a bad solenoid of the starter. Helps me confirm and fill better about spending a buck 50 at part store and several hours under car replacing starter.

Starter fixed problem but now a loud clicking while running coming from area of starter. Rechecked starter and it is tight. Could it be the new gear need to wear in or it doesn't disengage fully from flywheel? If so how do I adjust? Thanks

make sure the wires are only where they need to be and not coming in contact with one another. it does not need to wear in. if it does not disengage 100% it's no good.

Vette is fixed. Second starter worked like a charm. After going across town twice and removing and replacing the starter twice it is fixed. The first starter must have not been properly adjusted or was not fully disengaging so had to argue with the parts dude to swap out for another. Before dark I even had a chance to wash, clay bar and wax vette. Ram out of time though to take her out for some stomping...lol. Again thanks for the assist from those who posted replys.
