Default Camshaft dowel pin

Hi guys,

I just ordered the parts to upgrade my opti to the new vented style from Jeff. He said I needed a new pin on the end of my camshaft, and that some people have trouble getting the old one off. The pin was less than $3. What is the best way to get the old one off? Best way to put the new one on?

Thanks guys

Heat the end of the camshaft and pull the pin with a pair of plyers to get it out. To put the new one in, lube it up and hammer it in (gently). You may try putting the pin in the freezer and then heat the end of the cam before insertion.

Better yet, buy a new cam ;). At least go with a hotcam :reddevil.

Wish i could, on a temporary pay cut at work, so updating the opti is the only thing i can afford right now. I plan to do cam, heads, roller rockers, etc either in the spring, or next winter, depending on funds...

what would happen if i just left the short pin in there with the new opti? does the splined shaft still rotate the opti? or is it just the longer pin?

If the cam is out of the car, then you can heat it to your hearts content. If it is still in the car, be careful as oil will catch fire and poof (best to remove the cam from the engine) and grab the pin with a good pair of vice grips. Any burs you put on the pin can be worked out later. The pin has to be long enough to drive the opti spark whereas before, the opti just spun off the timing crank. Take your time. You will not be able to drill the old pin out, it is stainless steel. The pin will come out, just be diligent.

woohoo!!! i got it out...took some vise grips, as tight as i could, torched the whole end of the camshaft, poured some water on the pin, and twisted and pulled...i think the twisting is what finally broke the seal, you could hear the click as it let go, and in about another 5 minutes i had it out!!!

now on to the next problem!!!
