Different Part Numbers.

1984- 7843501 1986-7845087

They may interchange but you can't tell from the parts book.

Default Steering columns

I don't know if they will interchange or not but the 86 has the resistor key and wire for the VATs system that is not present on the 84.

Do you have both columns now?

The VATS ignition isn't of concern but there were some differences between the columns you mention. The mast jacket and the lower part of the steering shaft (in the column) are differently part numbered and it's possible that the intermediate shaft connection to the lower (in the column) shaft is different.

If you had the two columns side by side you could certainly confirm what I've mentioned. The coupling if it's similar could be just indexed differently between the two columns and then it would require maybe just re-indexing the steering wheel after the replacement.

Why do you feel you need a column?

No i don't have both in hand, And its easier to just replace hole column. And the intermediate shaft connection to the lower looks different IN PIC. Cost to rebuild is about $130. Got 1 that has warranty and great shape for $195 FREE SHIP... Now i have the original in good shape but the block screw hole worn out wood just have to change that But rather just change out columns... 2yrs ago they were a dime a dozen for $85 now they want $125-1200 That's all... Thanks i think ill go for the 84 i found for $195... And rebuild the 2 i got to make a good 1
