While out driving today, I noticed that my car was starting to run hotter than normal. I just figured it was because the temp was in the mid-90's. After driving around for an hour and getting soaked with sweat I stopped to check things out. As I lifted the hood I noticed the inner fan stop spinning and the temp was 225. The car has the dual fan option so I guess it was only running on the front fan. I read in the Tech Tip section that the inner fan is control by the ECM, so is that where my problem is? Or could this just be the fan motor starting to go out. I hope this isn't going to major PITA trying to fix this, only about 4 weeks til the Labor Day Celebration. Any help you guy can offer my will be a huge help. Thanx :cry
The fan motors have brushes in them that eventually wear out and the fan stops running. Unplug the fan and jump 12v to the fan motor terminals and see if it runs. If it does, then check the fan relay, it may be defective.
Does the fan spin by hand? If not, the motor is kaput. O'Reilys and AutoZone both carry replacement fan motors for less than $30 and it takes about 30 minutes to replace it if you can get the front on a ramp. I recently had to do this without a ramp and it only took me an hour or so, including cooling off (95*+ Texas heat) inbetween removal and reinstall.
Should it be the fan motor, most likely available from GM. Put two on the 90 couple months ago. GM replacements were good units. US made, good hardware, reasonably good instructions.
OK, just thought of a way to make the fan come on. I jumped the terminals under the dash and guess what, the fan came right on. Now I know the motor is still good, where do I go now. Could it be the relay? Or possible could it be the sensor in the radiator going bad and not turning the fan on. Its really hot out today, so I think it shouldn't talk now for it to start acting up again. Be back after a test drive. I HOPE!
the wireing is good to the fan since you got it to run by jumping at the ADL. Try jumping terminals A to E in the fan relay itself. If the fan starts up the relay or the connection at the relay is bad. Good Luck.
Ok, maybe I'm just confused, is the inner or outer fan the main fan. The inner fan ran when the air was on; and after a long drive with the temp at around 205 only the outer fan was running while it was in park. With the air on, the temp never got over 215 and the electonic climate display was reading 105 outer temp. It seem to have ran fine, could this be a ECM problem or do relays act differently when they get hot? It sure ran alot hotter last night. :mad
There is nothing wrong with your main (behind the radiator) fan since you can force it on at the ALDL. The ECM turns on the fan when the coolant gets to 228 F and the previous owner must have installed a lower temp switch which turns on the aux (ahead of the radiator) fan because the factory switch (between cylinders 1 and 3) turns on the aux fan at 238 F. Also, the main fan is turned on when the a/c is on. Your temps don't sound bad and look pretty normal. One easy thing you can do that might help is to do my lazy method of cleaning out the radiator. The radiator gets road debris stuck in it and should be cleaned out periodically. You can remove it and clean it , or....my way is to blast water backwards through it with a garden hose and then blast water around the radiator cap gap to flush out the debris. It made a difference in my 87.
