Well I think it has finally happened, I believe I have lost my first Bose speaker. After about 5 minutes of playing the stereo, the right rear speaker starts making a squealing noise. The noise stops as soon as the power to the stereo is turned off. So did I finally lose an amp, and is it fixable or do I have to throw money at it to make it work?
You may want to do a little troubleshooting. You can switch the speakers and see if the problem moves. If the problem moves with the speaker, then I'd say it's the amp. There are some good tech tips for replacing the capacitors in the Forum Tech Tips. If you need to do that, make sure you buy industrial grade capacitors. I believe the tech tip says buy at Radio Shack - the temps are too low and they won't last.
If it squeals while the power is on, it is most likely the amp. If it makes noise when the power is off, it is the relay. I had amp problems with mine. I called Bose Corp. They will rebuild your amps for $65 ea. (last year's pricing). You send them to Bose, they will rebuild and ship them back in about 4-6 weeks. I kinda think they just send you new ones, because I had marked each amp as to which speaker they belonged, but when I got them back, there were no markings on them. But, they may have cleaned the bracket, also. It was amazing the difference in my stereo with 4 good amps.
If the offending speaker continues to squeal when the volume is turned down, it is most likley the amp. I've done three of the four on the 91 over the last year and am waiting for the fourth to go. Shouldn't have to wait too long.
Putter: You wouldn't happen to have that address for Bose would you? Or is there a link on their webpage? I rarely drive the car anymore so 4-6 weeks won't be that bad of a wait; especially when I get my 3.54 and my Mid-Am. dual exhaust on. Vrrrroooooooommmmmmmmmm!
I've replaced 3 of the 4 amps since getting my 91 about a year ago. For $100 a shot, its not so bad, but if I only had known, I'd be $300 deep in 1 year, I probably would have just gone for a whole new system.
It's the amp... about 8 capicators have to be changed. It's only about $6 in parts and the time to do it. My right/rear speaker did the exact same thing... had it fixed in two hours (I do electronics).
92Shawnster: $6 sounds a lot better than $100 or $150. Do you know where I can find instructions on doing this or are they in the tech section? I have a friend who does electronics, and I'm sure if he knew which ones to change, he would do it for me. :seeya

I'll try to get you the phone number for the audio engineer that I spoke to when I originally called Bose. She knew all about the systems, because she is not only an audio engineer, also drives a 94 Vette. Now that is some kind of lady!!
Thanks alot Putter, I don't think I want to mess with fixing it myself. I'd probably just make it worse. And by the way, is this women at Bose single?  :seeya
