I thought someone once posted that the earlier Dana 44's were different than the later Dana 44's. Anyone know for sure. My car is an 89 with a Dana 36 currently.
yes there are a few differences and different ratios were available in different years. Ron at contemp can fill in the details....my memory is not so good anymore.
Anyone know of a source for stronger ones? I haven't broken one yet and I really don't hope to, however I think it needs to go on my future mods list for whenever I get the money.
Thicker Aluminum, Steel, Carbon Fiber? What would be the best bet?
The primary differences between the early and late D44 is the mounting holes for the camber rods. There is two bolts for each camber rod bracket. The early D44 diffs had smaller bolts and thus smaller holes. The later had larger holes and bolts.
Supposedly the later is stronger for the camber rod mounts.

As long as you are talking about Corvette Dana 44's,they are pretty much the same thing. The Corvette uses what is known as a Dana Super 44 application. These use a 1 5/8" diameter pinion shaft whereas some non-Vette Dana 44 rears use a 1 3/8" pinion. Some of these standard Dana 44 gearsets have been modified for use in the Super 44 housings i.e. 3.92,4.09,4.27 ratios(and some 3.73 ring & pinions).
Back to the point,3.07 cogs are available. The 4+3 cars featured that ratio.
I finished 1 side today. Not too bad at all. I removed 3 bolts and slide the half shaft right in. The 3 bolts were for the tie rod, the leaf spring, and the camber arm at the knuckle.
With a house, a wife, and a 3 year old, there is alot of other stuff to do.
