I have a 1986. I have replaced the intake gaskets, egr, aim, tps, purge valve, vacuum lines, rotor, cap, coil, plugs, wires, transmission, knock valve, starter, rear mains, power steering pump, gutted air pump, fan relay, fan pig tail, master cylinder - and many more interior and exterior parts.
I wanted to mention the engine bay and running gear so readers can have a sense of what was replaced.
How to the problem at hand. When I reach under the hood and move the throttle lever to "goose" the engine and then let it go it takes what seems like too long to reduce idle back to "pre-goose" condition.
This problem was there before I gutted the AIR pump. I checked vacuum lines and can not find a leak.
The car also idles high after driving for a while. Start it in morning and after heat up it goes to 7000 rpms. Drive it then stop at a red light it is at 10,000 to 11,000 rpms. If I "goose" it the rpms will go to 6,000 to 7,000.

How much did that 11,000 RPM engine build cost you?
Being serious make sure there is nothing causing the throttle body to stick open.
Lets start with basics. Are you sure your timing is right? What about your fuel pressure? If all is right, what about your throttle body? Did you take the IAC out AND the housing off the TB and clean it thoroughly? Passages and all?
The timing is probably off since I don't have a timing light. I will take it to auto shop and have that set first.
what aklim said...did you clean all passages of your tb? like with carb cleaner? get right in there and make it all squeaky clean? and into the throats of the intake?
