I finally got the car back together and started the motor. It started then ran poorly for a few seconds and then died. Would not restart. I traced the problem to the coil wire that I had trouble installing on the distributor. Got that fixed and let it idle for a few minutes. Decided to take it for a drive. :nonod: bad idea.
Got about 2 miles away driving through traffic. I noticed a lot of oil smoke from the drivers side so I pulled over and lifted the hood. Found a very large oil leak on that side where the valve cover meets the head. Also noted a nice yellow flame under the exhuast     on that side. Fortunately, the flame went away without burning the car up so I called a tow truck and had it towed back to my house. I think the fire was limited to the exhuast.
I also had some strange alternator behavior. That maybe due to the grinding I did on the back for the valve covers.
Note to self. Let car run for a while before taking for drive when valve cover gaskets are changed. Also, don't go out at 5:00 pm during rush hour.
Car runs really good except for leaks. I still need to tune it but looking good so far.
