Default LT1 accordion intake coupler question

Is there any gain to having a smooth piece instead? If so, does anyone know of someone that makes one?

I saw smooth intake tubes advertised in a recent MidAmerica Catalog. For 93-96 Vettes, the part numbers are 611-193 for the front coupler and 611-194 for the rear one. Each cost $59.99 or you could buy the pair for $99.99. I guess it makes sense that a smooth tube would flow better than the corrugated tube but I wonder if the results would be worth $100?

If you end up replacing yours, I may be interested in buying both stock pieces (if you want to sell them).

Ive been curious about it too since I saw the ad in Ecklers. It reports a 5-7hp gain but I would like to see some more proof before shelling out my hard earned cash.

I would think that you may see a slight HP increase, but may loose torque. Turbulent air = torque, smooth air = HP. Just my .02

As you all may or may not know, we did a test on thi sat the track and didn't see a gain.

Mackey put a traffic cone in place and saw no difference at all.

I'm not surprised. When I examine at the intake manifold, it looks like the hard 90* turn to make it into the intake runners has to dominate the airflow. Since the intake path (airfilter/bellows/MAF/TB) doesn't hold back a 350HP LT4 addressing the bellows would seem to be the wrong place to start.

They don't help much is the general consensus, plus the accordian style OEM ones are flexible for a reason: under hard torque the engine moves on the mounts but the air cleaner box being fixed to the radiator housing does not move with it, so the intake duct needs to be able to flex a little. Also, the accordian ribs help keep it from sucking in and collapsing down under the strong vacuum created in the duct during high throttle application.
