I have had a Ripper shifter in my vette for the last two years. It's a wonderful piece, except for the buzzing that occurs especially in 4th gear. If you put a little pressure on the shifter the buzzing stops. I have had the shifter apart, lubricated the hell out of it; and can see no metal to metal contact. Still the buzzing continues. In contacting B&M about the problem, they told me that this is a function of using non rubber gromets in the shifter, and all performance shifters are noisy. Not the answer I wanted to hear.
Has anyone else had experience with a Ripper shifter buzzing????
I do have a single mass flywheel so I do know BUZZ. Does the Hurst shifter also buzz????
Even worse. (I've had both  ) I'm going back to the Ripper. There is a few tricks to get rid of some of the Rippers side effects. One is to add two 14mm o-rings on either side of the universal. I did mine this way, and didnt experience any of the rattling that so many complain about.
There's a couple things I tried that helped with the 'ripper rattle':
- Make sure you have the newer design roll pin instead of the original solid pin. It helps take up the slack in the linkage
- Make sure the bronze bushing pins aren't contacting the shifter housing. Mine were initially which made a bunch of noise. I filed them down a little so only the nylon bushings are making contact with the case.
Before those changes, it would rattle all of the time. After doing this, I only get rattle at high RPM at WOT (even with my single-mass aluminum flywheel). My engine is also a little out of balance -- I'm hoping once I rebuild / balance it, the rest of the rattle will be gone.
