Ok, I am planning on having a new rear-end put in. I have an 86 w/stock rear-end (125k on it). I believe it is a 2.73. I was wondering if I should go 3.07, or maybe 3.42? What are benefits, drawbacks of either? Or other options?
Re: Rear End? Which ratio? Looking for acceleration (dbwade36)
Assuming you have a basically stock motor, you're probably aware that the L98 is pretty much out of breath by 4500 RPM, or so. It doesn't necessarily help to go too short on the gearing, since you're essentially narrowing the range of RPM that you can pull. Since you didn't say, I'll assume you have an auto, as well. I'd go no more than 3.07's.

I'm a rebel, I look at it like this - GM thought that 3.45s were the perfect gear for the ZR-1, balancing acceleration, top speed, and highway economy.

The ZR1 is a 6000 plus rpm motor and the L98 is a below 5000 rpm engine. The optimum gearing is completely different between the two of them. I would go with 3.07 or 3.23.

Also there is a big difference if your transmissions final drive is a .5 such as a 6 sp. has, or a .7 like in the auto trans.
