1986 corvette. My check engine kight comes on sometimes when on the freeway and stays on untill i start to cruise around town a little bit. Then the light goed out, car runs fine with no appearant problem. What is the problem and what would be the fix.
You'll first need to check and see if any codes are present in the ALCL (assembly line communications link). Yours is most likely inside the driver's side compartment, under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. It may or may not have a cover to it. You'll need to ground the A & B terminals (top row, first 2 slots from the right ) with the ignition on but the engine not running. The blinking of the check engine light will tell you any malfunctions. Having a GM shop manual or another reference source will help you a ;ot. The check engine light will blink in 2 digit series. One blink followed by 2 blinks (code 12) in a set of three indicates the ECM is operating normally, and the next set of blinks will indicate a problem. If there is no problem, the code 12 will continue to flash. Some problems are intermittent, and set a code at times and then at other times not set a code. Again, a reference source will help sort things out.
good luck :seeya
Jeff, I'll bet you have a code 32 fault, due to a EGR situation showing up. Usually the egr switch needs replaced. It's on the egr tube located from the pass. side exhaust manifold up to the back of the intake plenum area. It's an easy, cheap fix. The fault lite only comes on after the engine gets hot at highway speeds after about 20-25 mins, or 20-25 miles, at least for me. It's not a performance problem, but more of a warning to get it checked. I drove mine a year before replacing. Just lazy!
