Default Ignition Problem

I have an 1987 C4 with a 6 speed in it. I took the 4+3 out. Has anybody had a problem with their ignition? I can go weeks with it starting with no problems. Then all of a sudden it won't start. It will compression start. But sometimes I'm on flat land. I get worried about taking it on long road trips. I've changed the distributor. Any ideas what the problem is?

What do you mean by compression start? My first guess would be starter and not ignition.

If it pop starts then the coil and distributor are working. Sounds like a no crank condition. Check your battery connections and proper power at the starter terminals when key on and in start positions. Go from there.

I live on a slight hill. If I roll it down the hill and pop the clutch it will start. I've changed the fuel pump. It cranks good, just won't fire up.

This problem has been going on for years. I plan on changing my starter soon. Lately when it gets real hot my starter has a hard time working. When I try to start my car it sounds real strong, but acting like it's not getting fuel. I just changed the fuel pump about 2 months ago.

wait let me get this straight. when u pop the clutch doing a roll start it fires and runs. but when u use ghe key, it cranks and wont start. is it cranking full speed?

what would cause the starter to work, but not allow either spark or fuel to the cyls?

It cranks strong. Could it be the ignition switch not sending power to the distributor?

this thread, while its on a fiero, may point you in the right path. There may be a 12v supply from the starter to the dist that is comprimised. check with a voltmeter to see if you have 12v at you dist with key in on pos'n and also while cranking.
