the other day i pulled my front wheels off for the first time, as i finally got the locking lugnuts off (the lug key wasnt with the car when i bought it). anyways, on the passenger side the only thing holding on the rotor with the wheel off is the caliper. even with the caliper on i can move the rotor on the hub a whole lot in and out. the driver side rotor won't budge (maybe its just "frozen" on?)
is this play correct and safe? i understand that as long as the wheel is on and torqued the rotor obviously can't fall off, but i'm used to every other car having a huge castle nut or something, usually under a dust cap, in the center of the rotor holding it on. this is just bugging me- but really exciting seeing those huge calipers up close for the first time!
You are correct. The rotors are not attached to the hub. On a front wheel drive car they are like you said with the castelated nut. I would try to figure out why your other rotor won't come loose.
