Default Backup lights don't work

So, I find out that my all my backup lights don't work...including the ones on the side. I vaguely remember hearing that it might be a relay in the trans or by the trans that causes this. Or is it a fuse?

I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and schedule a time to take it in, but I was just wondering if any of you have had this problem?

Its a switch in the trans. It was a common failure on 6 speed cars.

Any idea whether this is a major repair or not?

If your car is a 6 speed , the switch is a pain in the butt to replace. If you have access to a lift it is about 50% easier. I hate laying on my back doing car repairs. But there is not a lot of room to work in there. I would say a dealer would charge at least 2 hours to replace it. The switch itself is ~$50 give or take.
