My 88 has been doing some strange things. The check engine lights has been coming on. It will stay on, then other times while driving, it flickers (not flashing) but faintly flickering from on to just barely off. I tried to read some codes, but the light just stayed on and never flashed out the codes (never had problems reading them before). Now the car requires that the accelerator be depressed to get it to start, and then as soon as you let off the gas, it dies (wont idle). I'm gonna disconnect the battery and try to reset some stuff and read the codes. Any other ideas? The car only has 30,000 miles and is in excellent shape (recently replaced cap, rotor, plugs). Only mods are a K&N, open filter box, and temp sensor relocator (which I did just before my problems started).
Thanks
Mike
I just replaced the ECM on my 88, it was causing intermittent SES light and 'limp home' mode, codes were MAF power/vacuum, low/high. Also, it would not stay in ALDL mode, which sounds like what you have happening if it won't flash and spit out the codes.
Mine only has 50K miles and when I replaced the ECM, I found that it was not the original either. Found one from CarQuest for $110 plus core exchange with a 1 year warranty. It was remanufactured in Canada, which I like better than overseas.
Mine CE light very obediantly stays out in town, but it will come on out on the highway, but, even then, only when the A/C is on. Happens on a pretty regular basis. It doesn't seem to affect the car in any way, at least according to the instruments and SOTP feel. When I pull in for gas or whatever and shut it off, the light won't come back until I'm back out on the highway with the A/C on for about a half hour or so... Doesn't come on at all without the A/C being on.
I've checked it for codes, my shop's checked it for codes - never found one. Not even a code relating to anything else. Go figger. If I didn't know better, I'd think my ECM's been programmed by Microsoft ...
