It appears that the converter on the 91 (auto) is rattling between 1100 and 1250 RPM only under load. Dosen't happen in neutral. Does this sound like it starting to break up? If so, suggestions on replacement solutions are welcome. Be aware that I do have to pass emissions in the near future.
do they actually measure your emissions or just look to see if the cat is there?......If they just look I'd gutt it the rest of the way ........ but if they measure it you're pretty well stuck............
I replaced the converter on my 88 with a Random Technologies converter. Still have the original (50,000 mi) if you're interested. Don't know about compatibility though.
I appreciate the offer. Here is my plan. I'm going to go ahead and gut the cat for now then wait and see if it'll pass "E" testing in the future. If not, I'll replace it at that time. Might as well enjoy it for awhile.
Turns out that not only was the main cat starting to fall apart and clog, but one of the pre cats as well. Soooooo. Replaced the main with a high flow cat and eliminated the pre cats. The sound of the 3 chamber flowmasters without the pre cats is amazing! I believe I'll keep it like this. Runs like the proverbial sexually abused primate! If it won't pass the E test, I'll just have to add alcohol.
