Default running rough

I took my 1986 out for a ride yesterday. I haven't been driving it in the winter but when ever its nice I take it out. Yesterday I noticed it was idling rough and seem to sputter when driving. I thought that a simple first step might be to put in a fuel additive. Is this reasonable? Do they work? Which is best? Thanks!

Ordinarily most additives are not going to help much but in your case it sounds like old fuel or some moisture build up maybe. Anything that dries up water might help but long run "cleaners" would be something like SeaFoam, Lucas injector cleaner or a bottle of Chevron Techron/Techroline. Go to a Chevron dealer and get a tank of premium and run it and see if it helps.

Good luck!

I'd dump some "Gas Dry" and see if it helps. How is the fuel? When was it from? I run my tanks to dry and fill up so I know whose gas is in there and how long it lasts and is it good. How are the fuel filters? What is the pressure with the hose disconnected? Does it hold pressure after engine is shut down? How is your spark? Do a fine water mist around the wires and see if you have an electrical storm in a DARK garage.

The rest of the "mechanic in a can" or "cleaner in a can" are designed to separate the owner from his wallet. Never bothered to use the snake oil.
