My alternator has begun to whine. Is it ok to spray a little wd40 to see if it lasts a little longer? Is there a rebuild kit available, or is replacement the best option if it will not quiet down?

Thanks!
Without knowing the year and which alternator is on the car presently it's difficult to recommend changes. If it were an early car with anything other than a CS144 then it might be an opportunity to improve the charging system.
What year? Is there any information on the alternator case that you can read?

It is a 1985, looks like the original alternator. The car is an early 85.

I don't see the thread right off but I believe an '85 might likely be the best candidate for a CS144 conversion. I believe the upper bracket of the '85 works well and even if an '86 or later is upgraded to a CS144 the '85 upper bracket is suggested. I'll search for the thread but best I recall someone mentioned a CS130 because he had one, I mentioned what was needed likely and later in the thread someone mentioned the CS130 was a "waste" and the '85 upper bracket made the CS144 a breeze.
Here's the thread. Disregard the '86 conversation and go down a few posts where the CS144 is mentioned.
If you're concerned with originality and you can determine that it actually is the OE then I'd rebuild/repair what you have. An original would be stamped 1105585, 1105450 OR 10479865 I believe.
