I have a 1986 corvette with an l98 that I've been working on. I've been having problems with the engine sense I got it. Passenger side exhause before the cat glows red hot and it backfires on the passenger side after warming up. I've replaced the injectors, and plugs and we attempted to adjust the lifters on that side but the problem persists. I've also changed the egr valve and checked for vaccine leaks. And suggestions.
If your exhaust is glowing red, it would indicate excess fuel or lean and timing issues.
I would would check your plug wires to be sure that you have them in the correct firing order. Which is 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2. The rotor in the distributor spins clockwise.
Some of the backfire could be an issue if you have adjusted the valves incorrectly. I sent you a PM about this.
Tonight when it is dark out, open the hood and disconnect the hood lights by unplugging them. Then start the car and look for any electrical arcing coming from your plug wires.

I had the exhaust glowing red on a car once, but it was not because it was running rich. The cause was a lean condition from a bad carb adjustment, and the timing was too far advanced.
I had an issue with glowing cats due to two injectors cycling open and dumping fuel. When replaced the cat still glowed as the fiberglass was now clogging the flow to the point it caused my car to stall and back fire out the plenum. I swapped out the two cats with a free flow exhaust pipe keeping my O2 sensors. Runs great now. Also when you shut the car off do you hear a hissing noise as if back pressure is coming out the exhaust?
