Default starter relay?

1994 LT1.
Just had a new clutch installed. two days later car wont start. Replaced battery. same problem. turn key click, click, click etc. manual trans.

Headlights, horn and all systems strong as normal. Jump start does nothing. Push started and it starts easily and runs normal. Starts as normal (with key) after a short drive.

Next day starts normal and as I leave my neighborhood (coasting with clutch in and idleing normally) when tach and speedo start jumping around. I decided to check starter, at this point. Still rolling I shut the engine off and try to restart: click click click etc. Let out clutch motor restarts easily.

What is going on. I don't think it's the solenoid, not the battery, not the starter.

When the new clutch was installed, is there anything the shop may have messed up? Could the starter relay have anything to do with the tach and speedo getting creepy?

I appreciate any help. I love my C4
This is my second c4 and my 3rd vette (previous one was 02 Z06) I like the C4 best. Thanks guys!

The starter clicking is probably the starter solenoid. I cant say if the start relay can or cant interfere with the speedo and tach.

Maybe the nut that holds the battery cable at the solenoid is loose enough to where sufficient current can't pass to energize the solenoid but still enough to power accessories.

When the starter did engage, did it sound different? Noisy? Grinding sound? If so, the bolts that hold the starter to be block could be loose. The starter body when it's tight to the block is how it's grounded.

More likely a bad solenoid.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply,

Starter sounds normal and operates perfectly...intermittently. Cannot try several times and get a good response. click, click.

Long tube headers, prevent visual inspection and I can't understand how the shop even got a wrench on it. I'm unhappy with the shop (petit issues) and have lost confidence, so it still may be loose wires (my first thought).

Tach and Speedo momentarily going crazy led me away from replacing starter and solenoid. Has me wondering if something else is going on and thinking maybe someone has had similar symptoms?

I'm trying to avoid running up a lot of shop time chasing a possible gremlin. Probably a job for the dealership...other thoughts are also encouraged.

Headers are known to cook starter solenoid in some cases, and the problem is what you are describing. My car had the same issue with the starter and long tube headers.

What I did was to add a solenoid above the battery when I changed the battery cables. Then relocated the (in my case) purple wire from the starter to the new solenoid, and jumped the S terminal on the starter to the battery cable. For now at least the starter turns the engine with every turn of the key. No I did not remove the starter for this because I cant remove the starter with the header on.

Makes perfect sense! What do you make of the crazy tach and speedo thing. It seemed to signal a no start episode? Sounds crazy, I know I wonder if the solenoid could effect dash function?

Thanks for the insight. The headers are very close.
