When I am standing still or driving and I turn the steering wheel
the power steering pump makes a continues chatter/squeaking sound.
But, power steering feels fine when I am driving.
I have check the fluid level and it is ok.
The car has less than 20,000 miles on her and I can't believe the
power steering unit is bad. I am sure it is very expensive to replace.
Could it be dampness on the belt?.......the wide tires make this important and damness will make that sound for sure............ hate to tell you where the dampness could come from........also make sure the tensioner is pulling the belt tight enough...........
I would first try some type of GM approved belt lube. Make a couple of turns, make sure the sound is still present, and then apply the product. Retest. If you have the original belt, could be getting dried out and may even need a new one. Also, check the belts condition and look for any cracks, dry rotting etc. Love those 96's.
